I was having a conversation with my mother in law the other day and she brought up the ways women dress for each other versus how we dress for men. I know that when I dress for me or my girlfriends I tend to take more risks and stray farther away from what is conventional. I’ll try a fun, new hairstyle or a different color combo or wear a more out there item. I think women are more appreciative of out of the box trends and styles.
When I dress especially for my husband, say for an anniversary dinner or special night out, I keep things more traditional. Instead of the bright red heels and plum top I’ll wear the black spike heels he likes or I’ll tone down the dark burgundy lips in favor of the soft pink gloss I know he favors. Its not about being someone else around him, or dumbing down my style. I think of it as a way to please him, just like I would if I bought his favorite steak or tickets to a game. Sometimes we do things to please others because in doing so it makes us happy.
I’ll say this, the majority of the time I dress for me and don’t worry about whether not not he will like it. Why? Because I’ve learned that if I am happy and comfortable in my style then I’ll be happier and more comfortable in my daily life. Happy wife, happy wife, right? Also I’ve found that it doesn’t really matter what I’m wearing, he likes me for me.
What about you? How do you dress differently for men vs. women?
