Old Navy coat (similar, similar) and boots; Target jeans (on sale), sweater (similar) and hat; Logo long tank; Cambridge Satchel Co. bag.
I’ve been sort of organizing and cleaning out my closet lately (it’s a sickness, I can’t stop), and discovered that I don’t own a lot of colored winter clothing. I have a ton of gray sweatshirts and tunics, a zillion black tops and a few other random plain items. I own one red tunic, one orange top, and an aqua blue-ish sweater. I think that’s it for my color options. Is that sad? Even my daughter asked me the other day why I don’t own anything in pink since it’s my favorite color. I have no idea why. I’m drawn to black and gray and a little bit of white and just basic, basic colors this time of year, (or always if I’m being honest.) It’s easy to get dressed if you throw on a black sweater and gray jeans, you know?
When it comes to getting dressed this time of year, especially when I’m in a hurry and I’m not throwing on a fun coat, mixing patterns or adding in leopard leggings, I find that wearing a bright color or two in my accessories sort of makes up for the
boring basic outfits. I have a collection of sorts of bright colored hats that I love wearing when I have an all black look on, and this highlighter pink purse I got for my birthday last year definitely brightens up the day as well. I love wearing several different bright colors at once, I think it adds a bit of whimsy and fun and helps me to stand out a bit more.
I’ve noticed two women while out and about the past two days that really caught my eye. One is a mom at my daughter’s school. She has a bright purple coat and always has a bright hat on and she just looks like a ray of sunshine to me. Fun and colorful, she stands out for all the right reasons. The second woman I noticed was in the line in front of me yesterday in Target. She had turquoise jeans on and a crayola red bag. I loved the color combination and the fact that she was going out on a limb to be unique.
When it comes to standing out with your accessories I think the easiest thing in the world to spend your money on is a bright hat. Target had awesome options, as does Forever 21. (Cheap, too. Bonus!) The next time you are out shopping, try looking outside the box for a fun colored bag or shoe. Red or pink rain boots are cute and functional, and I think a scarf is also one of the easiest ways to bring color to an otherwise colorless outfit. Don’t be afraid to wear more than one color as well, but keep in mind you can wear different shades of the same color.
Tell me, do you have a lot of color in your closet?
