True story: last year at this time I had 238 followers. At the beginning of 2013 I made a PROMISE to myself that I would intentionally work each month to grow my readership little by little. How, you ask? It’s easy. Sponsorship. I sponsored at least one blog each month, choosing either one expensive one, or several less expensive ones, and there you have it. Does this work alone? NO! You need to make sure your content is great, because no sponsorship can make readers stay. They can ONLY lead readers to you. The rest is up to you and your brilliant mind to keep them there.
Here are three things to look for when sponsoring:
1) Don’t just buy an ad. I think ads themselves are not worth it. They bring little traffic and aren’t worth your money. You want an ad PLUS something. I personally don’t care if my button is on a sidebar, but I don’t mind if it comes with a feature. A lot of bigger blogs offer only ad space, but unless you are willing to fork over A LOT of money for nothing else, I wouldn’t go for it.
2) If you can, get the biggest feature they offer, IF that is what you are looking for. You want your post to be the star of their blog for an entire day. I don’t like to be tacked on to the very end of a long winded post as an afterthought either (this happened to me once and it stunk.) I like to be able to write a feature that will be on the sponsorees(?!) blog for that day, the WHOLE day.
Also, here’s a tip for writing a great guest post: DON’T just introduce yourself and link back to your most popular posts. I know that when I read these I rarely click over. They just don’t interest me, plus they get pretty boring after awhile. The solution? Write the BEST POST you can think of, the one that you would normally write and save for your own blog and market the crap out of. Write THAT post for someone else. Make it useful, funny, whatever you think will make people read it, and at the end want to click over. Be helpful, come up with something clever that you think will attract readers, be YOU.
Living In Yellow, Two Thirds Hazel and I Wore Yoga Pants to Work all worked really well for me last year, feature post wise. As an honorable (and a bit more expensive) option, Casey Leigh was a great sponsorship option as as well.
3) I have had amazing luck with doing group giveaways on other blogs, which led me to opening this up on my blog as well. I love that these are often inexpensive, yet bring a big bang for your buck. I first did this on A Night Owl Blog and saw a HUGE jump in traffic and readers the first month. It was so worth it I know I will do it again this year.
Which leads me to….
I have openings for the Group Giveaway spot for this February! For a $15 buy in (plus $10 towards a group gift card), you will have a chance to expose yourself to new readers. Every single person who participated in the January Giveaway grew. EVERY SINGLE ONE. Trust me, I’m a little graph obsessed and I keep track;)
The first nine people to sign up will be in for the February giveaway, whether your accompanying ad starts now or three weeks from now. Once you are in the queue I pencil you in! I would love to have the chance to work with you and help you grow your blog.
