My actual guest room/super boring office space I don’t use.
You know how you can live somewhere for a bit, sort of organizing and decorating different rooms at a time until one day you notice you forgot something? My house has a couple of places like that, complete works in process that I’m earthier searching for the perfect curtains/knick knack/etc, or rooms that are so out of the way that I stuff all my extra stuff I don’t like it there and shut the door. My guest bedroom is like that. It’s in the (finished) basement, and has no particular use. My husband uses the walk in closet and bathroom down there (best married living situation, EVER), but other than that it is the place where all our old furniture goes to die.
I have a need to turn this blank room into a work space for myself where I can store all my books, camera equipment, and have a comfortable (and quiet) place to write. Right now I have all that stuff stored in a built in bookshelf in the upstairs living room, and I write anywhere I’m comfortable. I also want to create an indoor photo shoot area for the
weeks/months days I can’t get out and do an outdoor shoot. I’m not a huge fan of indoor shots, but I would like the option when I’m in a pinch, and also for video tutorials.
Most of what I currently have in there has been thrifted or is a thousand years old. I really want to find a desk at Goodwill that I can paint. I’m looking for something with storage in it as I currently have an old table I’ve been using that I found on the side of the road 8 years ago. I’m also looking for a great chair I can either paint/re-cover that would be comfortable to sit in. I love how the photo above has the white desk with the bright yellow chair. Cute, right? For wall art, I like finding fun and quirky prints I can frame and put up over the desk and on the surrounding walls. I think printing out some of my Instagram shots and taping them up creatively (like THIS) could be fun, too.
Lastly, I have a futon in there that we use as a bed when a guest is in town, but I’d love to pop it with some fun throw pillows and make it more graphic and cute. Oh, and maybe add some new curtains and anything else I can get suckered into when shopping in the home section of TJ Maxx?
I’m hoping to start gathering everything together next week and putting my plans into action. I’d love to create a spot in the house where I can really focus and dedicate to my blogging world (and also hide all my stuff;) I’m the type of person who tends to do better dedicating myself to decorating one specific spot at a time, versus gathering one thing at a time for various rooms. So there’s that.
Here’s to a new home office!
