I had a little epiphany when I took my shopping hiatus recently. In the past I feel like I’ve shopped one of two ways. I either buy what seems trendy at the moment (whether I need it or not), or I buy things in bulk based on price (whether I need it or not.) Do you sense a trend here? I’m a consumer through and through, and can be influenced very easily by pretty fabric, or a new shape, or intriguing pattern.
When I wasn’t shopping I got a chance to really see what I had and what I needed, instead of always adding something new. This is a problem for me. I love the thrill of wearing (and buying!) new things, and once I’ve worn them a couple of times I move on to something new. While I do tend to shop at cheaper stores, this isn’t the best strategy for my wallet (or my overfull closet.) Also, I get into a cycle of need, need, NEED that isn’t great for my overall well being. In other words, I needed an intervention! I decided to come up with a plan to streamline my shopping and determine WHAT my buying and wearing decisions are all about.
My three part plan to helping YOU grow a more USEFUL closet:
I’m slowly weeding out what I don’t wear and making note of WHY I don’t wear it. Is it the cut, the fabric, the fit, the color? Ask yourself, why did you buy it (was it on clearance?), and why did you ultimately decide to get rid of it? This can help you make smarter decisions while shopping in the future.
On the flip side, what in your closet do you LOVE wearing, and WHY? What drew you to the piece and what is it about it that you love so much? I have a couple of things that I wear over and over again, and they all tend to be really wearable, neutral items.
What do you have ENOUGH of, and what do you need to add? I found that I have a ton of pants options, but not a lot of tops that weren’t basic tee shirts. I have dresses galore, but I’m missing cardigan/sweater options to wear over them and make them wearable for Spring. I don’t need any shoes or bags or jewelry, my collections of all of the above are embarrassingly abundant. Take notes of what you need and sticking to it when you go shopping in the future.
Tell me, what is missing from YOUR closet?
