I grew up in a small, seaside town in New Hampshire, where the beach was always 10 minutes away. (It was AWESOME.) In high school we would wear our bathing suits under our clothes and scoot out during breaks to sit on the seawall and watch the guys surf. I remember during my senior year I somehow ended up with a two hour or so block in the middle of the day where I was free to leave, and that felt heavenly. Bikini’s and flip-flops were the required style those days, with a cover up on top for class, and beach towels and a chair were always in the back of our cars. The freedom of those days was intoxicating, to say the least.
Anyway, there was a miles long seawall that lined this whole stretch of rocky shore where the boys surfed, and was conveniently located near this quaint surf shop called Cinnamon Rainbow’s. That shop carried the usual gear (Sex Wax!), plus all the Roxy clothing and bathing suits, (and other assorted stuff I would have no idea what to do with.) All the cute surfer guys hung out there, and there’s something to be said for a teenage crush wearing a wetsuit folded down to his waist outside his car in the parking lot. Ohhhhhh, the memories;)
Something I love about this time of year is the ease of clothing, and the idea that stress has no place in lazy Summer days. I love loading up the car with my kids and heading out in nothing but a bathing suit, an easy breezy cover up dress, a bright headband, and fun patterned flip-flops. There is zero thought of anything but the scent of sunscreen, the shriek of two kids as they cannonball into the pool, and whether or not I’m on chapter two or three of my new novel. I simply care less about everything that requires my energy when dressing. This includes footwear.
Roxy has paired up with Flip Flop Shops to create limited edition flip-flop designs available throughout June (designed by a 19 year old as part of a fan contest!) They are part of an initiative for a “Stress Free Month” campaign and were created to call attention to the link between stress and heart health. This is a cause near and dear to my heart, because my grandfather had heart troubles when I was in high school and successfully lived through quadruple bi-pass surgery, and is healthy and happy today. (Yay!) Heart disease is the number one killer in adults in this country, with stress being a huge part of heart health. YOU can help fund the fight against heart disease by purchasing a pair of these flip flops from Flip Flop Shops nationwide. They are cute, bright, and so easy to slip on and slip out the door. I also love footwear that can be hosed off in a parking lot on the way back to the car;)
P.S. There’s also a workplace initiative call “Flip Flop Fridays“, where participating employers donate $5 to the cause when employees wear flip-flops to the office in June (score!) Here’s to a stress free month, and here’s to a Summer of flip-flops!
