Since I, between the ages of 10 and 20, essentially came of age in the 90’s, I can’t help but notice all the styles that have been popping up over the past year or so that remind me of everything I wore (or wanted to wear), as a teenager. I remember so clearly reading the pages of YM and Seventeen magazine, where the Taylor twins and Liv Tyler were the models of the moment, and how awesome they always looked in their baby doll dress and combat boots. I wanted to BE THEM, just wake up and morph myself into the pages of the magazine and exist in the perfect grunge world they did. (Oh! And remember Alicia Silverstone in all those Aerosmith video’s!) I listened to Nirvana on my Walkman (ha!), watched 90210 religiously (um, Brenda and Dylan 4-eva), wrote notes to my friends in class, and enjoyed many pairs of overalls worn with one shoulder undone. I loved a big and baggy sweatshirt with a scrunchie on my wrist for hair emergencies, had and ACTUAL beeper in high school (Jesus…), and thought that Gwen Stefani was amazing when No Doubt’s Tragic Kingdom CD came out.
It’s sort of funny seeing styles come back to mainstream fashion when you feel like this all happened about 20 seconds ago. Now I can pick and choose what I like from that (amazing) decade and wear it better than I did when it actually happened. I love a dark lip, plaid anything, and dark jeans. I enjoy floral baby doll dresses and fuller brows and even overalls again if they’re worn in the right way. I WILL NOT wear the heavy soled platforms loafers I saw in Target the other day, though, or probably anything that I wore back then that is something I really did own. That just feels weird to me.
I’ll also save you from the white eyeliner and hair flip bob I rocked circa 1999. You’re welcome;)
