Ever since I was a little girl I have been obsessed with clothes, style, and shopping. I used to have a blank notebook that I would use those fashion templates in, and I would create outfit upon outfits on the women I had drawn in. They never had faces or hair, but their outfits were on point lol. I had a big opinion on what I wore as far back as I can remember, too. For a time I would only wear “twirly skirts,” or I’d find a uniform I loved and wear it to death (some things don’t change!) For a long time I dreamed of going to college at FIT in New York for Fashion Design, but chose a different route instead (that lead me to my husband and our amazing life, so no regrets.)
In 2011 I started this blog as a place to bring my love of shopping and personal style back into my life and back in focus. I had two kids under two, I was drowning in early motherhod, and I wanted a place just for myself. I’ve been writing here steadily since then (almost 1000 posts!), and while I have seen so much change since I started (I mean, the birth of Instagram and all of social media, basically), this space here has remained a constant.
(Fun fact: Who remembers when this blog was named Because of Jackie?!)
Ever since Instagram sort of became the new way to blog, I’ve struggled to find out my direction here. Am I a style blogger? An influencer? A content creator? Growing on Instagram became a full time job, and I had to learn new skills just to keep up. I think a lot of people have the opinion that blogging in itself is dead or over, but I disagree! I read so many blogs myself, and love that I can search blogs and have a place of reference, something that is hard to do on social media, which tends to move at the speed of light. I think of my blog as the central hub for all I do and all I will do. I may spend a lot of my day on Instastories, but I essentially funnel everyone from there to here, either to my Shop My Look Page or my Style Newsletter. Different parts of social media may come and go, but this space is one that has remained constant. I value that and I know others do, too.
Which cycles me to my purpose.
I always struggle when people ask me “what I do.” Influencer or Style blogger just doesn’t encompass the value + content I strive to create on a daily basis, in my opinion. This blog is my job. I make money styling outfits, educating women on how to live their best lives through personal style + health/wellness, and creating value via blog posts, videos, and other content. I love it so much. It fires me up in the morning to get up each day and work.
You see, I’ve always loved shopping online and in stores for new things. I love reading 200 reviews on a top on Amazon to see how it will fit. I love styling outfits and showing you what I wear and why I wear it each day on Instagram. It brings me joy to find things that YOU will love and be inspired by, because I know not everyone likes to do it. For a lot of women shopping and finding what looks good is a chore and I respect that, that it why I love helping. Styling looks and inspiring others is where I thrive, so why not do it for good? I liken it to me getting Hello Fresh each week. I don’t mind making dinner, but I really want someone else to shop, buy, and create the perfect meals for me. That’s what I do here! I do the work of creating inspiration and value for you when it comes to getting dressed easier each day because I love to do it, and I know so many of you don’t love figuring it out as I do. We all have gifts and it is our job to find out what they are and use them for good if we can.
My purpose here is to make your life easier, by using what I am good at and love, and sharing that knowledge with you. Helping people get dressed each day more easily, or taking the pain out of shopping may not sound world changing to some, but anything that takes away a pian point for someone else is a win in my book. All of us are really good and passionate about something, and if we can turn that into a service or a way to help others. That is magic right there!
Which is what I feel like this blog and the work I do is, magic. I feel the most “flow” and magic in my life when I am doing this. Whether it is writing a blog post, my newsletters, creating videos on Instagram, or chatting with you in my comments or via DM and email. I hear from you how much what I do helps you and that right there is EVERYTHING. Blogging in and of itself is really isolating. Most of what I do is in front of my laptop at home or talking into a phone for video, and it is hard to know if what I am doing is impactful. But then I hear from you on a daily basis, and I hear you say that I am bringing ease and joy into your life. Without a doubt, this is my purpose. I can use this gift to help and inspire, and it feels like all I’ve done up until now has led me here. That little girl who used to draw outfit upon outfit into a blank notebook is doing it, and it is more than I dreamed of, truly. To do what I am passionate about on a daily basis, as my work? To build this brand from the ground up to what it is today?
I am forever grateful.
