A couple of years ago I wore extensions almost all of the time. I loved how I could get the long and luscious look for my hair that mother nature never blessed me with on her own…insert crying face emoji. I’ve tried out a bunch of different brands in the past four years, and have even made my own using hair wefts and sewing in the clips myself (don’t ask, I was being cheap…) The real secret to wearing hair extensions? The quality! I’ve worn extensions at all price points and have found that they are always more believable when the extensions are made with real hair and are good quality. Also, look for tightly sewed in clips and hair that is the same width from clip to end. I’m all for saving money where I can, but hair extensions is not the place you want to cheap out on;) TRUST ME.
Here are some more tips to wearing extensions:
1) It is so important to get a great color match! I worried about this when picking out these extensions, because my hair is a lot lighter on my ends and I wasn’t sure if I should match my roots or what my end color is. I watched this video (scroll down for the Youtube video!) a couple million times and chose the Royal Medium Brown color. Initially I thought it was too dark and that my ends stood out too much, but once I clipped them in and curled them with my own hair I felt that it did work. I think I could have gone with the light brown color as well, though, and it would have been more pronounced ombre, but since I change my color a lot I went with the most likely hair color that would match. The extensions do come with a separately packaged hair sample for a color match, so as long as you don’t open up the actual extensions you can exchange for the correct color if it is not a color match.
2) Choosing a length is something that can be tricky. I went with the 18 inch length and in my opinion it is really long. I like this look for a more dramatic effect, but for day to day life I would probably go with a shorter length (you can choose anything from 14-24 inch lengths.) I would say that if you have shoulder length hair and want these to look believable, I would go with the 14 inch length. If your hair is already long and you just want added fullness? Then go for the longer lengths. (How many times did I write the word LENGTH in there? Ha.)
Another option when it comes to length that I have done before is to bring your extensions to your hairdresser and have her trim your extensions to fit your current hairstyle. You WILL get weird looks from folks in the salon when you do this, but the custom cut is worth it here. Just clip in the extensions once you are there and have them trimmed to the desired length you want. I found that when I did this in the past I got the most believable look out of my extensions, and I will probably do this for this set as well.
3) Finally, styling your extensions the right way is important. I find that I can’t just clip them in and go, because the different lengths are way too obvious and it just looks off. For the style above I used the 4 clip weft, and three, two clip wefts only. (Holy options from Irresistible Me, too! I got SO MUCH hair and so many different size weft options. Love this!) Note: I also got he 200 gram option, which is the weight of the hair in the extensions. I like that I could use LESS wefts and get the thicker hair look. Too many wefts in my hair feels heavy, so I dug this.
Here is how I style mine: I section my hair off with a clip and put the biggest, 4 clip weft in right about my ear level. I then curl that section WITH MY REAL HAIR before I section it off and put in the other clips. This is important to curl your real hair with the extensions because it blends in better. If you curl the extensions before putting them in it just looks weird and you can see the separate sections! I then put in the other clips (one each around my temple and one right above the 4 clip weft in the back,) and curl these wit my real hair as well. The final top of my hair gets curled and blended with the extensions as well, and then I run my hands throughout the whole thing to break it up and spray the life out of it with hairspray. Done! The whole routine took me about 15 minutes.
For me, extensions are a great way to have fun with my hair without huge commitment. I can rock a side braid on a bad hair day, I can throw these in and top them with a beanie if I’ve gone way too many days between washings, or I can glam myself up for a special occasion. I also love that these were super soft and comfortable to wear. It is important to have extensions that feel comfortable in and don’t scratch your scalp, because that will drive you nuts! When it comes to hair and my style in general I really like to have fun. I like to rock extensions sometimes, and be casual other days, get really dressed up for the grocery store, or bum around in yoga pants for days. The point is, life’s too short to not try something new.
Thanks to Irresistible Me for the extensions! This was not a sponsored post, but an honest review. I would never post or write about anything that I don’t really like myself. Thanks for reading, guys!
