I was listening to a podcast the other morning (it was Online Marketing Made Easy with Amy Porterfield, LOVE!), and she took her listeners through a typical workweek for her and it was fascinating. I love seeing how successful, work from home entrepreneurs set up their days and how they battle through issues that come up. It really made me think about how I organize my days and how I can do it better. Because honestly? When you work for yourself and take care of a family, the lines of everything become very crossed and you have to really discipline yourself to get things done AND set aside time to do the things that bring you joy<—-one of my intention words for 2018!
I’m going to take you through a typical workday for me, which includes both of my kids being in school. (This is HUGE when it comes to productivity. I have battled through the baby and toddler stage while working from home, and this is easier…so mama’s of little ones, the days of more time are coming! The days when my kids are home on weekends or on school breaks are vastly different, but I do always make time for the little things, which I will include below. Here we go!
5-6am: I wake up at 5am on the weekdays and do my personal work. The house is quiet and dark and so peaceful! I get up, get dressed (usually workout clothes), and then write my gratitude list. I then either listen to a motivational podcast, do some journaling, or read. I finish with 10 or so minutes of meditation.
6-7:15am: My kids get up and I cook them breakfast, and we sit together in the kitchen and listen to music (Mumford and Sons on Pandora, usually), and eat. I make a smoothie for my husband and I, and pack my kids’ snacks and lunch. I then bring my kids to the bustop and send them off to school.
7:15-8am: This is when I mindlessly scroll through Facebook and Instagram, read my favorite blogs, and call my besties. Not much productive happens here, lol
8-9:30am: About 4 days a week I go to my CrossFit class. I love it and often enough, it is one of the few times I talk face to face with people outside of my own home. #hermitproblems
9:30-10ish am: Shower, get dressed (joggers, a tank, and a cozy cardigan!) After my shower and before I get do my makeup and hair I will often lie on my bedroom floor on my accupressure mat and meditate some more. I find my meditation goes a bit deeper when I am alone at home.
10am-1pm: This is my “work” time. I write my blog posts and health and wellness and Mind, Body, Spirit newsletters, I plan and film my Facebook Live videos, I take photos for social media, I post to my social media accounts and my blog and Health and Wellness groups, etc. It changes daily and I am working the most here in getting more automated in what I do each week and getting less distracted with busy work.
I also sell magical shampoo, and I am working on another secret project that I am so freakin’ excited for;)
1-3pm: This is my ME time and I almost always read and take a small nap at this time. I’ve realized over time that I don’t have to feel guilty that I like to take a nap on the regular, or that I am lucky enough to have the time to. The fact is, I’ve designed my life to include the things that bring me joy (naps!), and it was not accidental in any way.
3:30-8pm: This is my kid/family/husband time. I get the kids off the bus, help them with homework, cook dinner, often bring multiple kids to multiple practices, and hang out with my family. It is really important to me to put my phone down during this time (mostly, ha!), and just be a mom/wife. While my mind runs a zillion miles an hour with my work stuff, I’ll just make a note so I’ll remember it later. I usually have a couple personal development books going, so I read a lot on the couch while they watch a show after dinner, or we watch a movie or just hang out.
8-10pm: This is when my kids go to bed and I hang out with my husband if he isn’t travelling. We are mostly just snuggling on the couch, or he is watching a show and I am reading. I try to head into bed around 9:30 to unwind, and I like to be asleep by 10, and it usually happens. I am not a night owl and fade early.
That’s it! What is YOUR day like? Do you work from home or do something different?
