I tend to be really picky about what I wear to work out in. I like to feel cute in what I have on, but I also don’t want to worry about what I have on during my workout, does that make sense? I despise workout pants that are too thin or that slide down, or tops I have to adjust constantly. I also need a supportive sports bra that I feel contained in, but not suffocated by. Is this too much to ask? NO
I have found that it completely depends on the activity I am doing that will determine what I wear. When I am doing CrossFit I need comfort and support and functionality. If I am doing yoga or walking it just doesn’t matter as much (though I’d wear a tighter shirt during yoga so it wouldn’t slide up!) 99% of the time I am only doing CrossFit, so I have had to find what works in regards to that. Let’s do this!
Workout pants: My favorite workout pants for the past 18 months or so come from Victoria Secret Sport. I initially bought a bunch of pairs after testing them out and I have been wearing them ever since. I prefer the high-waisted styles as they contain everything, and I love a capri length, personally. I do think they have switched stuff up, though, and I am not sure if the pants are the same. I don’t usually wear any color other than black, so I can only attest to those. I find they wear well and I have seen no difference in fading or wear, and I wash them a lot.
I just bought two pairs of workout pants from Fabletics and liked those a lot. I find Fabletics to be hit or miss for me, sizewise, but when they are good I love them. The two I bought and love recently are the High Waisted Mesh Powerhold leggings and the Salar Mesh Powerhold Capri in a size small (true to size.)
In the summer when it is super hot out (I live in Alabama and CrossFit is NOT air-conditioned), I like Lululemon’s Speed Up Shorts because they have built-in underwear and don’t ride up. I have the 2.5 and the 4 inch ones and I am more comfortable in the 4 inch length! I also enjoy a simple pair of Nike running shorts because they are so lightweight!
Sports bras: When it comes to sports bras, I get pretty specific. I have a larger chest and a smaller frame, so fit is everything. I want support, but not suffocation. I only have two brands in my workout drawer right now, two Lululemon Energy Bras (in black and gray) and a ton of Victoria Secret Sport ones.
I like Lulelemon’s Energy bra the best because the straps are thinner on top and the back is pretty, and because it holds you in really well. I bought a size 6 and could have sized up to an 8, I think?. I’m not sure if that would have worked, but the small holds me in nicely and I don’t feel weird at all running or jump roping with it on. It just squeezes me in the sides a bit.
Victoria Secret has a ton of inexpensive options for all types of workouts. You can buy from there by support. I have a bra similar to this and the support is great. I also love some of their cute minimum support ones for when I’m running around in athleisure wear and want something sporty. Victoria Secret always has great sales that rotate through constantly, I always check in and often get 2 for the price of 1, or a sale similar to that.
Tops: I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear this, but Victoria Secret Sport, Lululemon (typically only with a gift card for my birthday!), and Fabletics are where I buy my tops. I find you can cheap out more here than anywhere else and be fine, but I tend to buy nicer ones that I wear for a long time. I love this criss cross tank, this mesh trim tank, and the one I have on in the pic above is from Fabletics (loving the silky fabric that wicks away sweat!) I almost always buy black, but I am trying to branch out. I bought a blush one (above) and an olive top recently. CRAZY, lol. Things get dirty in CrossFit, so I gravitate towards darker colors.
Shoes: This has been the hardest thing for me! Shoes change depending on your activity type, and I have tried a few to find the right kind. For CrossFit I love the Nike Metcon 3’s. They have the support I need for lifting weights, and I felt the difference immediately when I wore them the first time. These are sized differently than the other Nike’s I have bought. Usually I have to size up a half size, but the Metcon’s were true to size and I bought my regular size (8.) These are not good for any type of running other than the light running we do in CrossFit. I can feel the difference in these when I run or do any type of jumping, like box jumps or burpees, versus my lihgt weight Nike Free RN’s. I love these shoes and I have been very happy with them. If you do any heavy lifting, I would recommend.
For running around and very simple gym activities, I like the Nike Free RN 2’s. These feel like air on your feel and I love them for daily use. I wear these in a size 8.5, which is the size I usually wear in Nike’s. I would change into these to do a WOD after the heavy weight lifting stuff is done.
Accessories: I don’t usually use/wear a lot of accessories to work out with. I don’t wear any rings as they cut into my hands when I am lifting weights, and I borrow the weight belts from CrossFit (I’m open to recc’s for this!) I often wear my Apple Watch, though it is mostly because I want to be connected in case my kids’ school calls. I recently bought this watch band for $11.99 (much cheaper than the one at the Apple store!), and I really like how lightweight it is. I also have a set of hand grips I use for kettelbell swings and anything where I need a good grip, or when I tear my hands up and need protection.
That’s it! I don’t think I ever thought about how specific I am about what I wear and like about my gym clothes until I wrote this post;) Tell me, what are your fave brands/pieces you shop at/love?
